Why is it important for an instructor to consider student performance data when providing feedback?  How can feedback be both observational and instructional?

The instructor should consider student performance data when providing feedback so students will understand the expectations of the assignment.  Students can gauge if they are on track or lacking in a particular area once feedback is shared.  Explaining to a student their current grade can help the student understand there progress level in the course to make adjustments when necessary.   Feedback can be  observational and instructional because the instructor will detail the areas of focus and also give tips as to how to successfully complete the assignment.
